Chemistry Exam Preparation

In Chemistry learners have to commit to memory lot of detailed information to get a good percentage in the Class X Board Examination. Just a few samples are covered here. As we get more specific requests from teachers, parents and learners we will add more.

For example, a school teacher has suggested an easy way for the students to learn about the colour change of the litmus paper. Acids turn the blue litmus red and bases turn the red litmus blue. Students often get confused. The teacher asked them to remember
ABR - Acid Blue Litmus Red
BRB - Base Red Litmus Blue
ABR is in the alphabetical order.
BRB starts with B and ends with B.
This way students will be able to remember easily and not make a mistake under exam pressure.

When we want to learn a new piece of information and remember it, we can associate it with something we always remember. By doing so we remember the new information and it is stored in the old slot.
To remember the technical names for the single, double or triple covalent bonds, we can associate them with the alphabetical order that is familiar to us.
Single bond - alkanes
Double bond - alkenes
Triple bond - alkynes
The beginning is same for all three - alk
The end is the same for all three - nes
The letter after 'alk' is different in each word.
Alkanes - a - alk a nes ('a' after alk - and before nes)
Alkenes - e - alk e nes
Alkynes - y - alk y nes
In the alphabetical order a comes first, e next and then y is the last.
Hence it is easy to remember
Alkanes - Single bond
Alkenes - Double bond
Alkynes - Triple bond
At the time of examination if under stress we forget things such simple tricks can save us.
